What is a Cataract?
A cataract is a clouding of the lens in your eye. The lens is a clear structure behind your pupil that helps focus light on your retina. When a cataract develops, it can interfere with your vision, making it appear blurry, hazy, or even double.
Causes of Cataracts
Cataracts are a common condition that typically occurs as people age. However, other factors can also contribute to their development, including:
- Aging: The most common cause of cataracts is age-related changes in the lens.
- Injuries: Eye injuries can lead to cataract formation.
- Medical conditions: Certain medical conditions, such as diabetes and steroid use, can increase the risk of cataracts.
- Smoking: Smoking can accelerate the development of cataracts.
- Exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation: Excessive exposure to UV radiation from the sun can damage the lens and contribute to cataract formation.
Symptoms of Cataracts
As cataracts grow, they can cause a variety of symptoms, including:
- Blurred vision
- Faded colors
- Halos around lights
- Double vision
- Sensitivity to light
- Frequent changes in your prescription glasses
Treatment for Cataracts
The only effective treatment for cataracts is surgery. During cataract surgery, the cloudy lens is removed and replaced with an artificial lens called an intraocular lens (IOL). Cataract surgery is a safe and effective procedure with a high success rate.
If you are experiencing symptoms of cataracts, it’s important to see an eye doctor for an evaluation. Early diagnosis and treatment can help prevent vision loss and improve your quality of life.
